If You Had To Give A TED Talk Tomorrow, What Would It Be About?

Before we jump in: This article was originally shared with my email community back in February of last year. I'm sharing it with you on the blog today as it's one of my favourite Weekly Letters that I've ever shared, and I'm hoping it may be of some encouragement and insight to you in your creative journey right now, and also give you a little sneak peak of what you can expect from Weekly Letters too. The value of an idea lies in the using of it
— Thomas Edison

Ideas worth spreading.

That’s the TED Talk tagline. It also sums up in just three words my entire belief system when it comes to the work I do: I’m all about sharing and spreading ideas that encourage and inspire growth, discovery, and change.

We’re all showing up online to share ideas that we believe are worth paying attention to. It may be through the content we share to market our services, or a lifestyle blog where we share personal insights and lessons learned, or podcasts and videos where we make space for our message and our purpose to come to life.

And it’s awesome. Honing our message, creating content that resonates and connects, and being brave enough to really put our best, most meaningful work out there is what I spend my days doing - in both my own journey and as a partner in crime in my clients journeys too.

Here’s the thing I’ve learned: sometimes we create around our best ideas, instead of honing in on what it is really want to say and share. We fill space with content that isn’t fully doing our message and our voice justice, and we keep ourselves small by staying in our comfort zones along the way.

So my question today for you is this: if you had to give a TED Talk tomorrow, what would it be about?

What’s your core message and purpose? What are you really aching to share right now? What are the ideas and stories within you worth spreading?

There is an abundance of noise readily available to us each day online. My encouragement for you today is to share ideas worth spreading, instead of just filling the space with noise that doesn't do your message and your purpose justice along the way.

Two ways you can practically make space for this in your content creation process:

  • What is the current TED Talk idea/story of this current season in your life and work? What are you really aching to explore, share, and start conversations around right now?
  • Every time you create and share a piece of content - what’s the core idea and message behind it? If this was a TED Talk, what would be the main takeaway?

Here’s what I’ve learned from working with over 100 creatives from all different walks of life and creative industries: everyone has a story, an idea, or a message within them worth spreading. You just have to make space for it, take ownership of it, and be brave enough to share it in a way that feels authentic and true to you.

As always, I'm rooting for you!
