This is a five-part exercise that walks you through my approach and mindset when it comes to being a game changer online. There's audio, mini coaching tasks, and everything you need as a jumping off point to start making big and beautiful things happen online.
Welcome to Be A Game Changer, a five part exercise that’s here to help you break the mould and do brave and bold things with your online presence. Amidst all the strategies, formulas, and techniques that are talked about often online, I personally have found that a huge part of making big and beautiful things happen online is the mindset behind the work that we do. Once you start to think big, that’s when the magic can really start to happen.
The first Be A Game Changer exercise is called Don’t Consume Advice, Instead Consume Ideas. I want to dig into a mindset shift that can really help you to unlock your potential and push the boundaries and possibilities of what your work can be. There is so much advice out there online for creatives, bloggers, and small business owners, yet sometimes it can be a little too overwhelming and leave us with too much information and no idea what to do with it all. I personally have found that consuming ideas more than I do advice can be a huge game changer along the way in this journey of making big and bold things happen online, and I want to share a little insight into that process with you today.
Why consume ideas instead of advice?
Advice can be limited. It can feel like we’re taking actionable change, but really it can just add even more noise and confusion to our process. Advice is rooted in formulas and, of course, very good intentions - but it still has its limitations. It mostly can enable you to replicate and repeat what the author has learned or achieved, but if it’s not pushing you to think big yourself and build your own methodology, it’s limited in its ability to help you unlock the potential of your online space.
Ideas on the other hand can push our boundaries and cause us to step outside of our comfort zone. They can cause us to think, explore, and experiment, and ultimately build our own ability to explore and build brave and bold ideas of our own. Ideas are sometimes shared in the form of advice, but they have a clear distinction in that they are saying something a little differently to everything else you’ve read before. Ideas have their foundation in the authors own experiences and research, and the best kind usually push the boundaries and think a little outside of the box.
Advice can be an awesome helping hand along the way in this journey of making big and beautiful things happen online, but when we come to rely on it too much we can keep ourselves small and ineffective. When we instead consume ideas that challenge and excite us, we then open ourselves up to bigger and bolder ideas of our own. Consume content that challenges you to think bigger. Use it as a jumping off point for your own ideas, methodology, and research - don’t just blindly follow advice, as that will keep you forever as a follower not a leader.
So how can you tap into ideas as a game changer for your own work?
If you want to be a game changer, leading the way and breaking boundaries in your industry, you have to be comfortable creating outside of your comfort zone. You can’t hide behind tried and tested techniques, and instead you have to carve out your own path and be okay with breaking the mould along the way.
Be curious about the thought process and methodology behind the big and beautiful ideas that you’re inspired by. Question everything - explore deeper than just the surface and really spend some time digging into strategies, theories, and formulas and don’t be afraid to look at things from a whole different point of view.
Let the ideas you consume challenge your own way of thinking. Let it push you into bolder and braver approaches to your industry, and let it help you find your own process of making decisions and building strategies to take your work and your online presence to the next level. Anyone can learn from advice and implement the techniques it shares, but to rise above and be a game changer you have to explore and build your own techniques and methodologies so that you carve you own path instead of following one that has already come before you.
Here’s A Coaching Task For You
Ask yourself: What are you looking for when you consume information online and offline?
To finish this first exercise, take a minute to explore your own intentions when consuming content and information, both online and offline. When you dig into the latest post or article from the thought leaders and game changers in your industry, what are you looking for? To be inspired? To learn? To be encouraged? To be challenged?
To save your time and creative energy, know exactly what you’re looking for. Don’t just waste your time flicking from article to article - consume with intention and be honest with yourself about exactly what it is you want to takeaway from the information you’re consuming. This will save you the headache of being overwhelmed by information, and will help you to use the information you do consume as a jumping off point for your own game changing ideas.
Be really honest with yourself about what you’re looking for. This will help you seek out voices and approaches that are best suited to you. There’s no point consuming ideas that are completely against your own value base - though it’s definitely wise to let yourself be challenged from time to time as this keeps you open to bigger and bolder ideas that you may not have come across before.
My last piece of advice? Don’t rely solely on advice and the ideas of others to make big and beautiful things happen online. You already have that ability within you to unlock your own potential, and usually the best ideas can come from your own experiences, experiments, and lessons learned along the way.
In the first Be A Game Changer exercise we explored why you should consume ideas instead of advice, and for this second exercise we’re going to dig into the topic of tapping into your ability to uplevel. What is uplevelling, I hear you ask? It’s taking things to the next level, pushing yourself and your own boundaries, and ultimately unlocking your potential to do more than what you’ve felt capable of doing so far. It’s pretty much at the core of being a game changer, and I want to dig into this topic and specifically talk about the part it plays when we’re working hard to make big and beautiful things happen online.
So why can tapping into your ability to uplevel change everything?
Game changers push the limits, of both their own boundaries and the ones in their industry too. Game changers aren’t afraid to switch things up, raise the bar, and always be moving forward towards something bigger and bolder than what has come before. When we uplevel, we open ourselves up to ideas, work, and opportunities that weren’t available to us before. When we stay stagnant, sooner or later our work will cease to have any serious impact or reach. Industries and communities are always changing, evolving, and moving forward, and when we tap into our ability to uplevel we then can choose the path of being a leader, not a follower.
So how do you tap into your ability to uplevel? You commit to creating outside of your comfort zone. You never allow yourself to become complacent, and you choose to lead instead of follow. You stay open to the different ways you can make room in your creativity and your routine for bigger and better things, and you embrace the journey of taking creative risks every step of the way. I know this sounds a little scary, but when you refuse to be anything other than remarkable, you’ll find the drive and passion inside of you that you’ll need to make it happen.
The secret to this? You get to define what remarkable means to you. Maybe it means that you’re a leader in your industry. Maybe it means that you show up and give 100% every time you work with a client, customer, or colleague. Maybe it means that you only create what feels authentic and true. Maybe it’s in the way you serve others, and maybe it’s in the way you serve your own journey too. Being remarkable doesn’t have to be defined by fame, money, and recognition. Being remarkable is whatever you want it to be.
So what about your upper limit?
Here’s the thing - you get to define it yourself. What I’ve learned so far from my own journey and working one-on-one with my crazy talented coaching clients is that we’re all so much more capable than we know. Tapping into our ability to uplevel doesn’t have to mean burning ourselves out and setting unrealistic expectations on ourselves. Instead, it’s knowing that we are capable of pushing ourselves, our work, and our creativity to be braver and bolder than what it is now. We can’t sit around waiting for awesome things to come our way. We have to choose to make awesome things happen ourselves, and exploring how we can uplevel, step outside of our comfort zone, and never, ever, allow ourselves to just blindly follow the crowd is how we embrace the mindset of being a game changer.
Here’s A Coaching Task For You
Ask yourself: What can you give up so that you can make room for something bigger and bolder?
The thing about tapping into our ability to uplevel is that, almost always, we have to make room by giving something up in the process. For you that may look like less binge-watching TV so you have more time to work on your creative projects. Or maybe it’s cutting down on your monthly spending so that you have more to invest into your business. Maybe it’s cutting out bad habits that are detrimental to your self care so that your mind and body are in the best condition possible to create. Maybe it’s walking away from negative mindsets and thoughts that are holding you back, or putting some other commitments and projects on hold so that you can give more of yourself to the task at hand.
Whatever it is, don’t be afraid to really give yourself the space and time to focus on doing the work and making things happen. We will of course always have lives to lead, but we can’t make things happen if we don’t commit to some serious hard work along the way. Only give up what you don’t need, and only give yourself to things that will ultimately feed your soul and allow you to bring to fruition that big beautiful vision you have for your life.
For the third Be A Game Changer exercise, I want to dig into the topic of choosing the road less travelled. This mindset can play a huge part in your journey of being a game changer, though I think it can be one of the scariest ones to embrace. For most of us it’s easy to see a tried and tested path where those who have come before us have succeeded and made things happen. It’s human nature to want to take this path, to believe that there’s a clear cut and easy way to get from A to B, yet on that path we will always be a follower, not a leader, and there is no certainty that what once worked for them will now work for us. On the other hand, the road less travelled is full of risk and the unknown, but it’s also where the magic can happen, and ultimately can lead us to really making big and beautiful things happen along the way.
So why not just choose the tried and tested path?
Because it keeps us small and ineffective. When we try and replicate what has come before us, we’ll never unlock our potential to find our own voice and place within our industry. We’ll forever remain followers, not leaders, and we’ll always be in the shadow of what has come before. The amount of impact and reach we can have on the tried and tested path is limited, as there will always be bigger, more seasoned voices leading the way.
Something I’ve found so important to remember is that what has worked before may not work now. Everything changes, and those game changers and thought leaders you look up to in your industry? I’m betting the majority of them carved out their own path instead of just taking the one that had come before them. We’re inspired by seeing people push boundaries, breaking the mould, and saying something new instead of just adding to the noise.
So you get to make a decision. Do you want to add to the noise? Or do you want to take the road less travelled and really have impact and reach with the work you feel inspired to do?
It’s time to Make your own rules & carve your own path
The thing is about the road less travelled is that you can still learn so much from the tried and tested path. Examine it, explore it in depth, and see what has worked in the past and what tried and tested formulas and strategies exist in place now. Embrace the formulas, ideas, and strategies that will serve you best - learn from them and really understand the process behind them. But then give yourself permission to do things a little differently. You don’t have to chase what everyone else is chasing. You don’t have to say what everyone else is saying if you don’t actually believe in it. You don’t have to structure your services, your shop, your content, or your business like everyone else is - you can break all the rules and do things your own way.
Train yourself to look at things differently - this is how you really embrace the mindset of a game changer. Don’t worry - this isn’t a complete call to arms to forgoing practical and purposeful strategy. Actually - it’s the opposite. Game changers make their own rules, carve their own path, and build their own methodology.
If you really want to make big and beautiful things happen online, it’s time to start building your own methodology.
Here’s a A Coaching Task For You
Ask yourself: What methodologies have you been following so far? Are they working?
We all tend to find comfort in tried and tested formulas and strategies. On the most part it can be a good thing - they’re tried and tested for a reason. However, not every formula, strategy and process will work for everyone, and the worst thing we can do is blindly follow them in the hopes that they will sooner or later start to work.
For this coaching task, start to explore the methodology you’ve been following so far. What strategies, ideas, and formulas have you implemented into your process and routine? Which thought leaders and methodologies have you been following along the way?
Now for the tough question - are they working? Are they helping you to take some really purposeful and practical steps forward towards your long term goals? Are they enabling you to make brave and bold things happen online? Some of them probably are, but you now have the chance to let go the ones that aren’t helping you to move forward. It doesn’t mean they’re bad ideas and methodologies - it just means that they’re not for you. The best part is that this should hopefully open you up to start building your own purposeful strategy - as strategy rooted in the specific needs of your business and online presence is how you really start to make things happen.
For exercise number four we’re talking about why we should stop chasing the things that won't actually make a difference in our journey online. This may sound like a strange concept, but something I’ve found in both my own journey and that of my clients is that it is so easy to be distracted by instant gratification and the things we think we ‘should’ be chasing, instead of the things that will actually make a difference to our lives, our work, and our business in the long run.
For this exercise we’re going to dig into this topic and hopefully help you to explore the things that may be draining your energy right now that don’t actually need your focus, and where best you can focus that energy and time instead. If you feel like you’re pouring hours and hours into making things happen but you’re struggling to make any progress or feel really fulfilled by your journey so far, this is the exercise for you.
First things first: Don’t be distracted by the things that don’t make a difference
None of us have unlimited energy and time at our disposal - so much of making things happen is about prioritising, making good decisions, and doing the work that really matters instead of being distracted by the things that don’t. We’re surrounded by so much noise, advice, and information that it’s tough sometimes to decipher between what really matters to you, and what is something that you think should matter to you because it appears to be important to everyone else.
Here’s how you embrace the mindset of being a game changer - you stop chasing the things that don’t actually make a difference when it comes to your own journey of making big and beautiful things happen. For example - I have a crazy awesome client whose entire business and online presence is all locally based. She’s passionate about her local town and working with people there, and her whole online presence and brand is built upon her desire to not only promote and market her business, but also be of service to her community too. She knows that she doesn’t need tons of comments, traffic, and social media followers from all over the world - all that matters to her is that the people in her local community get involved with the things she’s creating and sharing. The fact that she knows this plays a huge part in her making crazy awesome things happen each and every single week - because she’s not distracted by chasing the typical ‘goals’ that the internet encourages us too.
The lesson here is that once we know what we’re working towards, we can then avoid wasting our time on the things that don’t really matter. The best way I’ve figured out what really matters and what doesn’t? Asking myself the following two questions:
- Is this going to help me reach my bigger goals along the way? If what you’re chasing isn’t actually aligned with where it is you want to go, all it will do is distract you along the way.
- Is this something that will feed my ego or feed my journey? Our ego can usually be the cause of many of our distractions. It’s that voice that tells us we need a certain amount of Instagram or Twitter followers, or the voice that obsesses over our traffic statistics without actually understanding how those numbers and statistics actually play a part in our journey and growth.
Don’t let your ego win - there’s no avoiding its presence, but we can choose to feed our journey and our purpose instead.
It’s time to Choose purpose & profitability over popularity
This happens to be one of my mantras for making things happen online - choose purpose & profitability over popularity. It may not be a mindset that suits everyone, but it’s one that serves me well and keeps me focused, on track, and reaching my goals along the way.
One of the biggest things that can distract so many of us is the quest for online popularity. We may not even see ourselves chasing it - but it’s all rooted in our obsession with statistics, follower count, and our social proof. These things without a doubt can make a difference - we of course need to reach people and connect with them if we want to build a thriving and profitable online business. However - higher numbers will not always equate to better growth, reach, and profitability. A little behind the scenes secret for you - my slowest traffic month to date this year was also my biggest month for earnings, which was three times more than my average monthly income. I’m sharing this because when we stop believing the lie that our traffic and ‘popularity’ defines our growth and potential, we can then open ourselves up to bigger and bolder things along the way.
It’s not the amount of traffic that counts, but the quality of that traffic that makes all the difference. If you’re guided by a bigger purpose and a dream and creative intentions that are rooted in so much more than just a desire to get rich quick and be ‘internet famous’, you’re already on the path to being a game changer. When we choose purpose & profitability over popularity, we build real connections with our audience and prospective clients and customers, and that in itself is where the magic really happens.
Here’s A Coaching Task For You
Ask yourself: What are you actually chasing?
What actually matters to you? What does that big beautiful vision of yours actually look like? Do you want to build something that gives you financial freedom and allows you to make a living doing the work you feel inspired to do? Do you want to find creative fulfilment and purpose? Do you want to build a life for yourself that is built around your lifestyle? Do you want to increase your monthly earnings and stop feeling so worried about money all of the time? Whatever it is - spend some time figuring out exactly what it is.
Then connect that big beautiful vision with tangible results that you need to make it happen. Don’t make it about numbers, instead make it about the results those numbers could bring. For example - an online presence with an audience and reach that allows you to book a certain amount of clients each month so that you can feel more stable financially and maybe even finally take that dream trip around Europe. Or maybe an online presence that promotes your brand and products and makes it easy for customers to buy from you so that you can then have more time to spend with your family and friends. Maybe you’re chasing an online presence that gives you the freedom to express yourself so that you can really figure out who you are creatively and how you want those creative intentions to manifest into a business that feeds your soul as much as it does your bank balance.
Once we know what we’re chasing, we can then stop being distracted by the things that don’t really matter. We can silence out all the noise that tells us what we should be working towards, and instead we can really focus in on the areas that really matter to us. And like we talked about in the last exercise of Be A Game Changer, this then allows you to build your own methodology that is rooted in purposeful and practical strategy for you and your business.
Here we are at the last Be A Game Changer exercise and we’re going to dig into why defining our own rhythm can play a huge part in helping us make big and beautiful things happen online. Think of this last exercise as an extension of everything we’ve discussed so far - it’s the final step in embracing the mindset of being a game changer. It may sound like a very simple mindset shift, but it’s a crazy powerful one for anyone who wants to be brave and bold online without compromising on who they are, their creative vision, and mixing their desire for both purpose and profitability along the way.
First up: Find Your Own Groove
Here’s the thing - when you choose the road less travelled and carve out your own path along the way, one of the best parts of that journey is being able to find your own groove and define your own rhythm as you go. You don’t have to go at anyone else’s pace but your own. This is ultimately how you lead the way - you’re not being guided or defined by the pace of anyone or anything else, your work stands on its own two feet and on the weight of the purpose and the game-changing ideas behind it.
So make sure that you find your own groove. Spend some time with your work and really experiment and explore how best it fits in with you and your life. Figure out what the best pace is for you right now and give yourself permission to just go ahead and do you every step of the way.
Second: Don’t Be Reactionary
This is the big one - don’t be reactionary. We’re surrounded by a whole lot of noise each and every single day. This can start to fester a little and cause feelings of comparison and envy - it happens to the best of us. One of the worst things we can be is reactionary when we’re working hard to do big and beautiful work online - the minute we let someone else’s work interfere with how we approach our own, that’s when we fall back into the follower not a leader mindset.
Game changers lead the way with their work, and although they know the importance of being aware of what’s happening around them, they don’t allow it to interfere with their own process and direction. You see someone in your community doing something crazy awesome, and you tell yourself that you’re not awesome too if you’re not doing something equally as awesome right now? That’s being reactionary. You have a purposeful and practical strategic plan in place that’s going to help you make awesome things happen (and it’s working), but then you see someone else taking a different approach and you immediately feel the urge to change your strategy too? That’s also being reactionary.
You’ve got to trust enough in your own decisions and your own vision that you’re not shaken or disturbed by the awesome things people are doing around you. You’ve got to let them do what they’re doing, earnestly cheer them on along the way, and then get straight back to work. It’s great to learn from others and pick up on tips and tricks along the way, but there’s a huge difference between doing that and just switching things up every time you see someone else showing up and doing the work. Just keeping on showing up, doing your thing, and working crazy hard to bring that big awesome vision of yours to life. Define your own rhythm and carve out your own path - that’s how you innovate instead of replicate, and that’s how you build something that causes people to stop and pay attention instead of just thinking ‘oh I’ve already seen that before’.
A final Coaching Task For You
Ask yourself: What does being a game changer mean to you?
We’ve spoken a lot about being a game changer throughout this five part exercise, and before we end I want to ask you one last final question - what does being a game changer mean to you? If you’re working hard to not only just build something that is purposeful and profitable but that is also impactful and not just another version of something else that already exists, you’ve already embraced the life of being a game changer. If it feels like it’s in your DNA to break the rules, carve your own path, and be a leader not a follower, this is the mindset for you. But as a game changer, it’s up to you to really define what this mindset it - because it’s a little bit different for everyone.
So what does being a game changer mean to you? What does it mean for your work? Your business? Your clients? Your customers? Your life? What is it that you’re working crazy hard to build right now?
Being a game changer means you get to define your own rhythm, break all the rules, and explore ideas and approaches that others may even turn their nose up and laugh at. But you? You see the world a little bigger than those people. You see possibility where others see a dead end, and you make things happen on your own terms and in your own way.
